500 families in Gurugram’s IREO project struggle as villagers cut power amid land dispute

Over 500 families residing in IREO The Corridors, Sector 67A, Gurugram, were left without electricity on March 12 after unidentified individuals cut power cables amid an ongoing land dispute between the developer and village landowners of Ramgarh. The landowners also blocked the primary access road to the society, making it difficult for residents to enter or leave their homes.

According to the Residents Welfare Association (RWA), tensions had been rising for days due to the landowners digging up roads and constructing barriers to prevent access to the society. The situation escalated when the power cables were severed, forcing residents to rely on expensive diesel generators for electricity. Essential services, including water and electricity supply, remain at risk, as the disputed land holds crucial utility lines for the society.

The RWA has repeatedly appealed to authorities to intervene and prevent such disruptions from occurring in the future. "This is not the first instance of power cuts due to the land dispute. Residents have faced similar issues in the past, and no concrete action has been taken to safeguard their rights," the association stated.

IREO, the developer of The Corridors, clarified that the official access to the society remains open via a 24-metre-wide road, but an alternative access road passing through the village has been blocked due to the ongoing dispute. "We do not own the disputed land. The matter has been taken up by the RWA with the local police, and we are actively working to restore the power supply with the help of DHBVN," IREO said in a statement.

Despite these assurances, residents remain frustrated and fearful of further disruptions. Many have urged authorities, including the police and district administration, to take strict action against those responsible for severing the power cables and blocking access. The RWA has also called for mediation between IREO and the landowners to resolve the dispute and prevent future hardships for residents.

With 500 families caught in the middle of a private land conflict, the demand for urgent government intervention is growing. As the legal battle unfolds, residents hope for a swift resolution to avoid further disruptions to their daily lives.
